Churchill Downs Racetrack
Churchill Downs, located on Central Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the oldest Thoroughbred racetracks in the country and indisputably the most iconic. The famous twin spires on top of the grandstands are the most recognizable architectural feature at Churchill Downs and are used as a symbol of the track and the Kentucky Derby alike.
Churchill Downs officially opened in 1875 and began its tradition as “Home of the Kentucky Derby“. This race, for three-year-olds at 1 1/4 miles, is the most popular race in the country and the prize most coveted by American horsemen.
The Derby has been the home of many great moments, including a record-setting time from the great Secretariat in his 1973 Derby win.
The racecourse recently underwent the most significant series of ambitious and comprehensive renovations in the history of the track. The project provided 64 luxury suites and spacious meeting areas built atop the track’s existing grandstand, with huge balconies providing stunning views of the Twin Spires. Furthermore, an expanded Turf Club, 15 luxury suites, new group sales areas, premium outdoor third-floor boxes, indoor box seats, a new media center, and television production compound, new dining, and entertainment areas have been recently added.
Installed in 2014, the Big Board is the largest 4K video board in the world at 171 foot wide by 90 foot tall. It sits some 80 feet above the ground and provides fans a 170-degree viewing angle of Churchill Downs racing.
Racetrack Construction and Measurement
The construction of a turf course allowed the track to play host to the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in 1988. Churchill subsequently held the sport’s top year-end event in 1991, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2006, 2010, and 2011.
The main track is a one mile oval with a one-mile chute and is 80 feet wide with 4% banking on the turns.
The turf course is a 7f oval inside of the main track that is 80 feet wide with 6% banking on the turns.
In addition to the horse racing track, clubhouse, and stables, the main attraction of Churchill Downs is the museum, which highlights the history of the area.
Churchill Downs Live Racing
Racing at Churchill Downs occurs in two meets. The spring meet starts in late April, one week before the Kentucky Derby, and continues until early July. A fall meet picks up in late October and closes Thanksgiving weekend in late November.
