New Jersey passed its own sports betting bill in 2012, challenging the federal government and sports leagues to oppose it. After 5 long downswing years, Supreme Court judges began weighing up the New Jersey vs. PASPA case in its entirety. After securing victory on May 14, 2018, New Jersey sportsbooks were free to go live. On June 11, 2018, NJ Governor Phil Murphy signed an updated sports betting bill into law.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and the New Jersey Racing Commission has complete right to set sports betting regulations, issue operators’ licenses, and provide oversight in the industry.
Anyone 21 or older and physically present within the New Jersey borders can place wagers on New Jersey sports betting sites. Wagers on college events involving NJ teams or held in NJ are not permitted.
The sports betting law also prohibits owners and other key members of professional and amateur sports leagues and franchises from accepting bets on the sports they are involved in.
This is the reason why Golden Nugget Sportsbook can’t accept bets on the NBA because owner Tilman Fertitta also owns an NBA franchise, the Houston Rockets.
Of course athletes, coaches, referees can’t be involved in any betting activity.
