BetMGM becomes first Official Sports Betting Partner of NFL’s Detroit Lions
On Thursday, Sept. 3, the National Football League franchise Detroit Lions announced BetMGM as their first official sports betting partner. The deal is built on an existing multi-year partnership with MGM Resorts and the Lions, which features the MGM Grand Detroit Tunnel Club at Ford Field.
This agreement is the second major partnership between a sports team and an operator in Michigan. The first was the Tigers and PointsBet partnership earlier this year.
BetMGM and Detroit Lions Partnership
Matt Prevost, BetMGM’s Chief Marketing Officer, said: “When we first opened the BetMGM Sports Lounge at MGM Grand Detroit in March; and hope to develop deep relationships with the state’s top teams. We are honored to be the first sports betting partner of the Lions and to offer their fans access to a variety of best-in-class promotions and perks only available on BetMGM.”
The BetMGM and Detroit Lions partnership features fan-focused assets such as presenting sponsor of Lions Bingo and Lions Perks. In addition, the deal also includes Team broadcast programming, digital marketing assets, and in-stadium promotions and signage.
Meaning, BetMGM can display its branding around the Lions’ Ford Field stadium. By playing Lions Bingo on Detroit Lions’ mobile app, players will be able to win cash prizes and all-expenses-paid trips to MGM Resorts properties across the US.
The Lions Bingo is a free-to-play prediction game where fans can guess what plays might happen or statistics achieved during home and away games. Whereas, Lions Perks is a rewards scheme where fans can collect loyalty points for purchasing merchandise or food and drink at Ford Field.
Fans can download the Detroit Lions mobile app to access both Lions Bingo and Lions Perks. The app is available for both iOS and Android devices.
“The Detroit Lions historic relationship with BetMGM has been years in the making; and we’re proud to announce details of our official partnership,” said Detroit Lions team president Rod Wood.
“We’re continuously seeking new ways to entertain and involve our fans which is especially important during such unusual times; this partnership with BetMGM will provide additional and exciting opportunities to engage our fans.”
Michigan moves closer to Online Sports Betting launch
This week, regulators gave notice for a Sept. 23 public hearing for comments on the draft online sports betting regulations in Michigan published earlier in August.
Considering this meeting on Sept. 23, it looks like the soonest sportsbooks could go live is roughly mid-December. This would allow sports fans to place wagers at least by end of the NFL season. Perhaps, just ahead of the NFL playoffs.
Many top sportsbook operators who operate in other states such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have market access agreements/in-house relationships allowing the sportsbooks to go online. The current deals include the following
- BetMGM – MGM Grand Detroit
- FanDuel – MotorCity Casino
- PointsBet – Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians
- DraftKings – Bay Mills Indian Community
- FOX Bet – Little Travers Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Gaming Authority
