2020 French Open, US Masters, and WSOP Postponed due to Coronavirus

Coronavirus continues to impact the lives of people everywhere. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising Americans not to attend events with more than 10 people. Last week NBA made an announcement of suspending its NCAA Men’s and Women’s basket tournament. A number of other Sports Tournaments postponed due to the Coronavirus such as the 2020 French Open, 2020 Masters Golf, and 2020 WSOP Poker. 

Let us look in detail how these tournaments and other sports are affected by the deadly virus Covid-19. 

2020 French Open Tennis

The French Tennis Federation postponed the French Open tournament for about four months because of the Coronavirus pandemic. They shift the tournament from May to September and juggling the tennis calendar.

They hold its 15-day, clay-court event at Roland Garros in Paris from Sept. 20 to Oct. 4. This is to ensure the health and safety of everyone involved in organizing the tournament. Not to mention, New Roland Garros dates clash with Laver Cup.

Indeed, the French Open’s new dates place it right after the hard-court U.S. Open. It is currently scheduled in New York from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13.

This is the first instance of a Grand Slam Tournament being affected by the virus that has spread around the world. The next major tennis championship on the calendar is Wimbledon, which is to start in late June in England.

2020 US Masters Golf

Due to the widespread of Coronavirus COVID-19, the National Golf Club decides to postpone all tournaments scheduled in the next two months. Those include the Masters Tournament, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.

The National Golf Club continues to work with the World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Office of the Governor, the City of Augusta, the Georgia Department of Public Health, and other local authorities.

The US Masters was postponed last week, and the Players Championship was canceled after the first round.

2020 WSOP Poker

World Series of Poker Circuit events, both domestic and international US sports tournaments postponed due to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. They made alterations to events after consultation with the host properties.

As a response to changes to Atlantic City and Las Vegas stops, WSOP.com is hosting 18-ring event online series for those inside the borders of Nevada, New Jersey, and Delaware. The WSOP.com Online Super Circuit Series runs from March 14 through March 31.

Participate in the online tournament’s 18 official gold ring events. Also, other nightly tournaments to win more than $1,000,000 in prize pool guarantees.

The suspension of 2020 WSOP events at certain properties in the US are as follows:

  • Harrah’s, New Jersey – March 5-16
  • Bally’s, Las Vegas – March 19-30
  • Bicycle Hotel & Casino, Los Angeles – March 7-18
  • Hard Rock Tulsa, Oklahoma – March 15
  • Horseshoe Council Bluffs, Iowa – March 26-April6
  • Harrah’s Cherokee, North Carolina – April 8-20

US Sports Tournaments Postponed due to Coronavirus: Some Other Sports and Games

There is a ban on Public gatherings in many places.  Several tournaments in March and April are already canceled/postponed as a result of COVID-19.

Here’s a look at how coronavirus affects some of the major events around the US.

  • NBA – Unfortunately, a player on the Utah Jazz tested positive for Coronavirus. Therefore, the NBA decided to suspend its season.
  • NCAA – NCAA canceled its Division I basketball tournament. Previously, they said March Madness would process without any fans.
  • MLB – Major League Baseball will cancel its remaining spring schedule and delay Opening Day by at least two weeks.
  • MLS – Major League Soccer suspends its season for 30 days while it re-evaluates the impact of the Coronavirus.
  • NHL – National Hockey League would suspend its season, effective immediately.
  • US Soccer – Men’s and Women’s National Teams games are canceled.
  • NASCAR – NASCAR postponed races in its national circuits through May 3.
  • Kentucky Derby – The 146th Kentucky Derby postponed until September 5.
  • UFC – Ultimate Fighting Championship postpones its next three events that are on March 21, 28, and April 11.
  • WWE – World Wrestling Entertainment decided to hold WrestleMania without fans.
  • Boston Marathon – Postpone until September 14.
