Unfortunately, current Texas law states that sports betting is still illegal, meaning FanDuel Texas is not yet available. These laws prevent sports betting – both online and retail sports betting. Sports betting came under consideration during the 2021 Texas legislature session, with numerous bills appearing that would have created a legal sports wagering industry. The next chance for legalization in Texas State will be in 2023 as the Texas Legislature meets every two years. Several Dallas-area sports teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks have thrown their support behind legalization efforts. Another Texas-based team, the Houston Astros, signed a partnership with BetMGM in August.
Other major sports teams in Texas include the NFL’s Houston Texans and the Texas Longhorns who are the biggest team in college sports in the state. When you consider the size of the state and the teams within it, and sports betting market in Texas would immediately become one of the most lucrative in the United States.
As it stands, residents can only bet on sports at horse racing and greyhound tracks, with the ability to play online strictly forbidden. The Texas lottery is also available but these are the only measures that got past the Texas House. There are plenty of people who are hoping TX betting will change course soon and improve the sports betting world in the US.
Texas 2023 Gambling Bills Fail
In an attempt to bring legal online sports betting to Texas this year, there were two bills brought before the Texas legislature in 2023, one for the purposes of online sports betting (HB 1942) and one for casino resorts (HB 2843). HB 1942 sought to legalize online sports betting in the state via a partnership with all of the Texas professional sports teams.
If Bill HB 2843 received approval, it would have brought several “destination resorts” into Texas. The bill outlined there would have been one resort each in the San Antonio, McAllen and Corpus Christi areas, with two of these destination resorts in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth areas. To pass, both bills would require a constitutional amendment, which means it would need a two-thirds majority in the legislature.
This news is no doubt a significant setback for those who were eager to see legal sports betting arriving in Texas soon. Following both of the above bills failing, it will not be until 2025 at the earliest that we now see legal online sports wagering in Texas.
