Types of Bets
So, you have signed up for a new sports betting account, have claimed the welcome bonus, and want to get started on a popular sports betting market. However, you aren’t sure what type of bet to place on the upcoming NFL game when presented with all of the options. Let’s take a look at the most prominent bet types.
Moneyline Bet: A moneyline wager is the most straightforward type of bet and is ideal for new players. This is a straight-up bet on who wins the event, fight or match in whatever sport. For example, if you are a soccer fan and are betting on a Champions League game between Chelsea and Real Madrid, you are picking the winner.
The numbers next to each team indicate the moneyline American odds, which show each team’s implied probability. The team with a “-” next to their odds is the favorite, while the team a “+” sign on next to their odds is the underdog.
Spread Bet: Most sporting events will have a favorite heading into the contest, whether it is the Super Bowl, the World Cup, a College football game or a Premier League game. A bookmaker will apply a spread to the game to attempt to create an even playing field. This is typically seen most for NFL betting, but point spreads are also regularly used in the NBA, as well.
When you hear the phrase, ‘betting against the spread’, this is a bettor that needs more than the favorite just to win the game. In this scenario, they have to win by more than a specific amount (the point spread), so the spread is ‘covered’.
Prop Bet: Props are short for proposition bets and can be any wagers that’s not a standard point spread, total or moneyline. They have become extremely popular because you can bet on your favorite player to achieve a certain target within a game, rather than simply team A winning outright. Some examples of what typical props look like include:
- Jonathan Taylor to score the first TD +500
- Luka Doncic over or under 5.5 assists
- Clayton Kershaw over or under 7.5 strikeouts
In the same way as point spreads, you typically have to pay the corresponding price with props.
Parlays: A parlay is a type of bet in which at least two wagers are linked together to create one large bet with a big payout. However, the catch is all of the best within the parlay must win, or the bet loses. The idea is that instead of betting $10 each on four games, you can make one $10 wager that will give you a far higher payout if all four teams win. If just one team loses, though, you lose your $10. The potential payout is based on how many legs are in your parlay, the more you add, the higher the payout, but the more difficult it is to win.
As well as a betting line being in place for the favorite and the underdog, sportsbooks will also set a total number of points scored in a match by both teams combined. This is referred to as the over/under or total. You can choose to bet on if you think the game will go over or under the total.
The Packers Patriots has a total of 50:
- If you bet the over, you need 51+ points
- If you bet the under, to win the total must be 49 points or fewer
If the total is 50 exactly, the bet is a push and your stake is refunded.
There are other popular bet types such a futures bet or live betting that allows you to wager on events during a match as they happen, such as next TD scorer in an NFL game. Once you develop your own betting strategy, you will be placing moneyline bets on football games quickly and efficiently.
Where to place my bet?
More than half the U.S. states now have some type of legal betting market, but only 20 have full online legal wagering. You should only sign up for online sportsbooks that are fully legal and licensed with an excellent reputation. Some of these sites include:
If you sign up to any of the above today, you can claim your deposit match offer and start betting right away.
